WORK DESCRIPTION

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

A fully trained carpenter has the most versatile construction occupation. They construct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures of wood, steel, plastics, plywood, and drywall, using carpenter’s hand tools and power tools, and conforming to local building codes. A carpenter studies blueprints, sketches, or building plans for information pertaining to type of material required, and dimensions of structure or fixture to be fabricated. A carpenter selects specified type of lumber or other materials, prepares layout, using rule, framing square, and layout tools. Marks cutting and assembly lines on materials, using pencil, chalk, markers and marking tools. Shapes materials to prescribed measurements, using power tools and hand tools. Assembles cut and shaped materials and fastens them together with nails, screws and or mechanical fasteners. Verifies trueness of structure with precision layout instruments and carpenter’s hand tools. Erects framework for structures and lays subflooring. Lays out and builds stairs, partitions, and cabinet work. Installs shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls. Fits and installs prefabricated window frames, doors, doorframes, weather stripping, interior and exterior trim, and finish hardware. Constructs forms and chutes for pouring concrete. Erects scaffolding and ladders for assembling structures above ground level. May weld metal parts to steel structural members. When specializing in residential and framing, there are the assemble and erection of the framework of homes, apartments, and condos. Commonly installing windows, doors, interior trim, cabinetry, roofing, siding, insulation, drywall and more. Specializing as millworkers and cabinetmakers carpenters can work on the residential, institutional, or retail structures fabricating and installing decorative and functional elements, including trim, molding, cabinetry, ceiling treatments, doors, windows, exposed columns and beams, displays, mantels, staircases and more. Specializing in interior systems, installations include complex systems such as acoustical ceilings, computer-access flooring, metal framing, wall partitions and office furniture. Millwrights install, maintain, diagnose, and repair equipment such as compressors, pumps, conveyors, gas and steam turbines, monorails, and extruders. Specializing in the millwright can lead to working at coal, gas, nuclear and alternative-energy power plants, automotive, aerospace, food processing, and pharmaceuticals industries.
A carpenter can perform their work for residential, commercial or industrial companies.

Apprentice wages range from $20.00-$34.00.
Journey-level wages range from $36.00-$43.00.

TRAINING PROGRAM

Each apprentice will be introduced to a mixture of classroom and shop training by attending school four (4) days a week per training session, approximately every three months. These classes run for nine (9) hours per day, 4 days a week, Tuesday through Friday, excluding holidays. During these training sessions, apprentices are paid an educational grant to offset travel expenses related to on-the job training. Wage increases are based on the accumulation of 750 on-the-job learning hours and the completion of two training units/ 2 sessions. Journey-worker status is obtained by completing a total of 18 training units/sessions and 6000 on-the-job learning hours.
