WORK DESCRIPTION

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Elevator constructors install, maintain and repair elevators. This includes advanced high-speed elevators for today’s sophisticated high-rise buildings as well as healthcare, hospitality, industrial and other industries.

Tasks required include installation and maintenance of electrical and hydraulic systems, rigging, and material handling.

Elevator constructors must be mechanically and electrically adept, with the willingness to learn and take direction. The work also requires heavy lifting, comfort with heights, and working in a variety of weather conditions and environments.

Apprentice wages range from $30.07-$48.12
Mechanic/Journey level wages range from $60.15-$67.67.

  • Must pass a drug screening

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must pass a drug screening

APPLICATION PROCESS

WHERE TO APPLY?

  • Applications are taken every two-years or it is based on a need that is determined by the Joint Apprenticeship Committee.
  • Recruitment and awareness of application acceptance will be placed in several area newspapers.
  • Applicants that score 70% or greater get placed on a list based on math assessment and interview score.

Each apprentice is on a 6-month probation period and will take a final exam after the four-year apprentice training and completing 8,000 hours of on-the-job training.

  • Top 150 applicants get placed on a list based on math assessment and interview score.

Each apprentice is on a 6-month probation period and will take a final exam after the four-year apprentice training and completing 8,000 hours of on-the-job training.

TRAINING PROGRAM

Once employment is obtained, probationary apprentices receive a safety module on a video from the education program. After completing a probationary period and on-the-job training with journey-level mechanics, they are eligible to participate in the craft’s education program. Classes cover rigging, electrical construction, hydraulics and material handling. It takes a minimum of four years to complete the courses offered.
